Uche Ekwunife, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (APGA), currently holds the seat, and has also secured the party’s ticket for a return to the red chamber in the 2023 elections.

Umeh won the APGA primary in 2019, but Ekwunife won the seat.
While announcing the primary results, returning officer Elizabeth Nwokeocha stated that Nwankwo received 162 votes to Umeh’s 151 votes.

Nwokeocha said the third candidate, Uzugbunam Okagbue, an aide to former Anambra governor Willie Obiano, had ten votes.

Umeh, on the other hand, congratulated Dozie, saying that the outcome reflected the people’s will.
