Oto Awori LCDA, Lagos— In a bid to cushion the effects of economic hardship, Chief Emmanuel Ubah, former presidential candidate of Ohaneze Ndigbo Lagos State and Chairman of Oto-Awori LCDA, Ohaneze Ndigbo has distributed ₦50,000 cash grants to 50 widows and paid GCE registration fees for 20 indigent children whose parents could not afford it.
The empowerment program, organized through the Chief Emma Ubah Foundation, was held at Kings Hotel Oto-Awori LCDA and drew community leaders, women groups, and beneficiaries from across the wards.
Addressing beneficiaries and community leaders, Chief Ubah said the gesture was personal to him and not tied to any political office.
“It has been part of me long before I dreamt of contesting for Ohaneze President,Losing the Ohaneze election does not mean I should lose my conscience,” he said.
“If you wait for title to help people, you will wait forever,real leadership is when nobody is watching, and you still choose to show up for your people.”
He described the current economic situation as “a storm that is hitting women and children the hardest.”
“A widow crying at night over school fees is a problem for all of us,a child who cannot write GCE because of money is a wasted future. We must act now before we lose a generation,” Chief Ubah stated.
On the ₦2.5 million cash disbursement, he added:
“This is not charity. This is investment. When a widow’s shop grows, 5 children will eat. When a child passes GCE, 10 children behind him will believe it is possible.”
Speaking with newsmen, Chief Ubah who is the Chairman Ohaneze Ndigbo,Oto Awori LCDA,said philanthropy has always been part of him, and that his loss in the recent Ohaneze Ndigbo Lagos State presidential election would not stop him from reaching out today the people.
He explained that the ₦2.5 million cash support was aimed at helping the widows grow or start small businesses, while the GCE sponsorship was to ensure that no child drops out of school due to lack of funds.
“We are in difficult times. Many families cannot feed, talk less of paying for exams. If we don’t invest in our widows and children today, we are mortgaging the future of Oto-Awori,” Chief Ubah added.
Ubah assured that through the Chief Emma Ubah Foundation, more interventions in healthcare, education, and youth empowerment will be rolled out in Oto-Awori before the end of the year.
Investigator news reports that the atmosphere was filled with joy as beneficiaries received their support.
Mama Christiana Eze, a widow and food vendor, said: “This ₦50,000 has come at the right time. Business has been very slow. I will use it to buy more goods. God will continue to bless Chief Ubah.”
Another beneficiary, Mrs. Halima Yusuf, a tailor, noted: “Things are hard, but today I have hope again. May God lift Chief Ubah higher than he is.”
For the students, the gesture was a lifeline.
Miss Blessing Okon, 17, who received a GCE form, said: “My parents could not afford it this year. Now I can write my exams. We will make Chief Ubah proud.”
Community leaders present described the intervention as “timely and people-centered.”
A community leader,Mr Chuks(Solar Empire)said: “This is what true leadership looks like. Chief Ubah has shown that politics should be about service, not just elections.”
The event ended with prayers for Chief Ubah, his family, and for peace and prosperity in Oto-Awori LCDA.
