Chelsea FC have moved swiftly to reorganize their technical bench, naming a new head coach just moments after relieving Liam Rosenior of his duties.
The decision comes on the back of a disappointing run of results that forced the club to abandon its initial long-term plan and act decisively.
Rosenior’s short-lived spell ends abruptly
Rosenior’s time in charge lasted less than four months, despite signing a contract reportedly set to run until 2032. The 41-year-old began on a promising note, winning his first four Premier League fixtures, but momentum quickly faded.
A 2-2 draw against Leeds United triggered a downturn in form, with Chelsea managing only one victory in their next nine league outings.
The slump deepened following a loss to Brighton & Hove Albion, marking five consecutive league defeats without scoring — a drought the club had not experienced since 1912.
That alarming streak saw Chelsea drop to seventh place, slipping further from the race for UEFA Champions League qualification and increasing pressure on the club’s hierarchy.
Although Rosenior accepted responsibility for the decline, the board ultimately opted for a change.
McFarlane takes interim charge
In response, Chelsea have appointed Calum McFarlane as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
McFarlane is already familiar with the role, having briefly stepped in earlier in the campaign after the departure of Enzo Maresca, including overseeing a draw against Manchester City.
The swift appointment reflects the urgency within the club as they prepare for a crucial FA Cup semi-final and attempt to salvage their push for European football.
While the immediate focus is on stabilising results, broader concerns remain. Chelsea are now expected to begin the search for yet another permanent manager under their current ownership, with growing recognition that their recent approach to hiring may require a rethink.
For now, attention turns to whether McFarlane can steady the team and reignite confidence during a critical stage of the season.
