Abuja, Nigeria –The Eastern Union a socio-political organization, has called on *President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step down and endorse Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a press statement signed by its National President, Hon. Charles Anike C., the group said the move would demonstrate statesmanship and help restore national confidence.
With presidential campaigns for 2027 expected to kick off soon, Hon. Anike urged the President and APC flag bearer to prioritize national interest above party interest.
“As the 2027 general elections are fast approaching and with the kick off for Presidential campaigns, we call on the incumbent, President Bola Tinubu, the flag bearer of the ruling APC, to show a spirit of sportsmanship by stepping down to Mr. Peter Gregory Obi,” the statement read.
The group described the call as “very important and urgent to ensure peace, unity and progress of the Country,” adding that it would be seen as “a great sacrifice and a rescue mission.”
Eastern Union listed economic hardship, security challenges, and controversies around the President’s records as reasons for the demand.
“Considering the present reality, the battered image of both President Tinubu and the Country in general… it is only reasonable and wise for the President to take courage to write his name on the sand of time like Ex President Goodluck Jonathan, by stepping down and supporting the candidacy of Mr. Peter Obi,” Hon. Anike said.
The statement also alleged that President Tinubu “connived with INEC to manipulate Obi’s victory in the 2023 Presidential election,” and urged him to atone by supporting Obi in 2027.
“President Tinubu should not only step down for Obi but also support him to win the 2027 Presidential election, in that way he will be seen to be grateful to the merciful God of Heaven. Otherwise, his ingratitude to God will end him in disgrace and disaster,” it added.
The group argued that Obi represents a break from the old political order and has pledged to serve a single term.
“Obi has signed an agreement to serve only one term, which automatically will complete the Southern two terms gentleman agreement between the Northern and Southern politicians,” the statement noted.
It further contrasted Obi with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, describing the PDP chieftain as “confused and desperate to retain the old order of evil,” and dismissed his recent policy proposals as “fakeness.”
“If Tinubu step down to support Obi to succeed him, it will result to a total generational change from the older generation to the new generation of leaders. And bet me, Nigerians and the World will not only applaud and celebrate Tinubu but forgive and forget all his sins and shortcomings,” Hon. Anike said.
The Eastern Union also addressed rumors on social media that some Tinubu supporters were planning to meet Ohanaeze Ndigbo leaders to ask Obi to step down for Tinubu.
“We want to believe that the news making rounds in the social media are lies.If true, those proposing such needs mental examination,” the statement said.
“This time, it’s forward ever and backwards never!! It is Obi/Kwakwanso now or never!!! Tinubu has cut his shot and should be grateful to God and now should give way and respect the will of the Nigerian people.”
Investigator news reports that as of press time, the Presidency, APC National Secretariat, and the National Democratic Congress had not issued responses to the Eastern Union’s demand.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is expected to release the timetable for the 2027 general elections in the coming months.
