The Catholic Secretariat in Sokoto, headed by Bishop Mathew Kukah, has been set ablaze by irate protesters.
There have been reports in this newspaper that protestors have taken to the streets to voice their anger at those responsible for the death of a Christian student, Deborah Samuel, who have been arrested.
The secretariat of the diocese, St Bakhita Church, on Aliyu Jodi Road, was set on fire. Bishop Kukah, as you may recall, was outspoken in his condemnation of Samuel’s murder and call for accountability.
Bishop Kukah, on the other hand, was evacuated after confirming over the phone with journalists that he was leaving the state.
Aminu Tambuwal, the governor of the state, has imposed a curfew in an effort to stop the spread of violence. Shehu Shagari College of Education student Ms Samuels was hacked to death last Thursday on charges that she had insulted the Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
There is widespread outrage over the killing.
