Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State has approved free health insurance coverage for persons living with sickle cell disorder across the state, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare access for vulnerable citizens.
The landmark intervention was announced as the world commemorates World Sickle Cell Day and is aimed at reducing the financial burden associated with the management of sickle cell disease while expanding access to quality healthcare services for affected individuals, popularly known as Sickle Cell Warriors.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, said the initiative reflects Governor Ododo’s determination to build a healthier society where no citizen is left behind.
According to the statement, the governor noted that sickle cell disorder remains a major public health challenge, stressing the need for increased awareness, early diagnosis, proper management and stronger support systems for those living with the condition.
Governor Ododo emphasized that no citizen should be denied access to healthcare because of financial constraints, assuring residents that his administration will continue to prioritize policies and programmes that promote the wellbeing of the people.
Under the free health insurance scheme, enrolled beneficiaries will have access to a range of healthcare services through accredited healthcare facilities across Kogi State.
The initiative is expected to significantly reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses and improve health outcomes for persons living with sickle cell disorder.
The governor also commended parents, caregivers, healthcare professionals, advocacy groups and development partners for their continued efforts in supporting Sickle Cell Warriors and improving their quality of life.
He further urged residents to embrace genotype testing and genetic counselling, describing them as critical tools in preventing the spread of the disease and promoting informed health decisions.
The Kogi State Government reiterated its commitment to strengthening the healthcare sector and ensuring that every resident has access to affordable and quality healthcare services in line with the administration’s people-centred development agenda.
As Kogi joins the global community in marking World Sickle Cell Day, Governor Ododo reassured Sickle Cell Warriors that they are not alone, pledging continued support through policies and programmes designed to enhance their wellbeing and overall quality of life.
