The Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Hon. Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), on Thursday joined corps members serving in Ikeja Local Government for a special environmental sanitation exercise held along Awolowo Way, Ikeja, in celebration of the 53rd anniversary of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The sanitation exercise, which forms part of the council’s weekly environmental activities, was dedicated to recognising the impactful role of the NYSC scheme in promoting national unity, youth empowerment, and community development across Nigeria.
The sanitation team proceeded to Awolowo Road where sweeping, clearing of roadside waste, and environmental monitoring activities were carried out. The team also moved through Ipodo Street to further conduct sanitation exercises and sensitization campaigns aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness and public awareness among residents and business owners.
The exercise extended through Olowu Junction, where refuse evacuation and sanitation compliance monitoring were carried out to ensure environmental orderliness within the area.
At Oyetubo and Fadeyi Junctions, the environmental team engaged in packing dirt deposits, clearing waste, and cutting overgrown grasses along the roadside to improve cleanliness, drainage flow, and the general outlook of the environment which the LAWMA officials also supported the exercise by providing operational vehicles used in evacuating and transporting the dirt,waste and heap of garbages gathered during the sanitation exercise across various parts of Ikeja, thereby ensuring proper disposal and effective environmental cleaning.
Speaking during the exercise, Chairman AKOD praised the corps members for their dedication, discipline, patriotism, and unwavering commitment to national service. He described the NYSC scheme as one of Nigeria’s most valuable platforms for strengthening national integration and grassroots progress.
He urged the corps members to continue to embrace the values of hard work, integrity, and selfless service while making meaningful contributions to the development of Ikeja Local Government and Lagos State as a whole.
Chairman AKOD also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting youth-focused programmes and initiatives aimed at creating a cleaner, healthier, and safer environment for residents.
Among dignitaries present at the exercise were Mrs. Christiana Salmwahg, NYSC Lagos State Coordinator; Mrs. Ojumu Abosede, Local Government Inspector (LGI), Ikeja Local Government; Hon. Seun Makinde, Special Adviser on Environment, Ikeja Local Government; Hon. Christopher Joseph, Special Adviser on Youth and Sports, Ikeja Local Government; and Sanitarian Olatunde Omotayo, Head of Department, Environment, Ikeja Local Government.
The exercise witnessed active participation from corps members, local government officials, and community stakeholders, reflecting a shared commitment to environmental cleanliness, youth engagement, and community service.
The Executive therefore reiterates its call on residents, traders, transport operators, and business owners to support environmental sanitation initiatives and comply fully with environmental regulations in order to achieve a cleaner and healthier society for all.
