“One of our mandates as the custodian of the NYCN structure is to protect and project the interests of every young individual in our society.

An extension of this mandate is to help the incoming generation build capacity and prepare them adequately for leadership, hence the reason for this programme.

“In the past, we have carried out entrepreneurship training programmes and other youth-focused initiatives. Now, it is time to build leadership capacity to ensure that we not only carry the generation behind us along but also prepare them adequately for the responsibilities that lie ahead,” Kushimo said.

He noted that secondary school is a critical phase in youth development and stakeholders must contribute to the guidance and character formation of students.

“Leadership is not merely about occupying a position; it is about responsibility, service and the ability to positively influence others. We want these young leaders to understand this early enough and begin to see leadership as an opportunity to serve,” he added.

Kushimo disclosed that the maiden edition is targeted at public secondary schools in Isolo LCDA, with each school expected to nominate three prefects.

He commended executives of the youth body and members of the organising committee for their commitment, particularly the Committee Chairman,Mr. Daniel Osibanjo, Chief Executive Officer of Destination Academy.
