The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of one of the state’s most distinguished sons, Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor (Rtd), OFR, who died on May 27, 2026, following a brief illness.
In a heartfelt condolence message, signed by his Chief Press Secretary Mr Christian Aburime,Governor Soludo described the late military icon as an outstanding officer, patriot, and statesman whose remarkable achievements brought honour and prestige to Anambra State, Nigeria, and the international community.
Lt. Gen. Obiakor, a native of Awka South Local Government Area, was born on February 18, 1951, in Zaria, Kaduna State. His distinguished military journey began when he gained admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as a member of the 10th Regular Course in 1971 and was commissioned into the Nigerian Army Artillery Corps in 1973.
Throughout his illustrious military career, he demonstrated exceptional leadership, professionalism, and strategic brilliance, serving in several key command positions across the Nigerian Army.
He held notable appointments including General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division and Chief of Administration at the Army Headquarters, where he contributed significantly to strengthening the nation’s military institution.
Governor Soludo noted that General Obiakor’s impact extended beyond Nigeria’s borders. He earned international acclaim through his exemplary service as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), where he played a pivotal role in peacekeeping and post-conflict stabilization efforts.
His sterling record of service culminated in a historic appointment in 2008 as the United Nations Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations in New York, making him the first African to occupy the prestigious position.
The appointment reflected the confidence of the global community in his leadership abilities and commitment to international peace and security.
The Governor described the late General as a disciplined leader, accomplished military strategist, and respected global figure whose legacy of selfless service, courage, and dedication to peace will continue to inspire future generations.
According to Governor Soludo, the death of Lt. Gen. Obiakor represents a significant loss not only to Anambra State but also to Nigeria and the international community, which benefited immensely from his wealth of experience and leadership.
While extending his heartfelt condolences to the Obiakor family, the Nigerian Army, friends, and associates of the deceased, Governor Soludo prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed elder statesman and urged all who knew him to draw inspiration from his exemplary life of service, integrity, and patriotism.
