As Nigeria commemorates the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, the Immediate Past Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu, popularly known as “Dullar,” has called on Nigerians to uphold the values of democracy, unity, and national development.
In a Democracy Day message released on June 12, Hon. Salawu described the occasion as a time for reflection on Nigeriaâs democratic journey and a celebration of the freedoms secured through the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes and patriots.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for recognising June 12 as a significant national day that honours not only the late Chief MKO Abiola but also the numerous activists, advocates, and ordinary Nigerians whose efforts contributed to the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance in the country.
According to him, the decision has helped preserve the legacy of those who fought for justice, fairness, and the right of citizens to freely choose their leaders through democratic processes.
Hon. Salawu noted that as Nigeria marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, citizens should take pride in the progress made through democratic institutions despite the challenges confronting the nation.
He stressed that democracy remains the foundation for peaceful coexistence, respect for the rule of law, accountability, and active citizen participation in governance.
“The freedom we enjoy today came at a great cost. It is therefore our collective responsibility to protect and strengthen the democratic principles that bind us together as one people,” he stated.
The former council chairman urged Nigerians to renew their commitment to building a fair, inclusive, and prosperous society, adding that Democracy Day should inspire greater patriotism, national unity, and dedication to service.
He expressed optimism that with collective effort and unwavering commitment to democratic ideals, Nigeria would continue to advance toward a brighter future founded on freedom, justice, equality, and sustainable development.
