…Says Vigilance, Unity and Collective Responsibility Remain the Cornerstone of Safe Communities

The Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to grassroots security with the commissioning of a modern security gate in Anifowose Community, calling on residents to deepen collaboration in safeguarding lives and property.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, AKOD described the project as a major milestone in the community’s collective drive to strengthen security and promote peaceful coexistence.
He commended the Anifowose Landlords and Tenants Association for its resilience, unity and determination in successfully delivering the project despite initial challenges.

The Chairman noted that Anifowose remains one of the pioneer communities in Lagos State to embrace gated community security initiatives, describing the feat as a demonstration of the community’s proactive approach to crime prevention and neighbourhood safety.
While applauding the successful completion of the project, AKOD stressed that effective security extends beyond physical infrastructure.
He urged residents to ensure that the gate is professionally managed on a 24-hour basis to guarantee seamless access for residents, emergency responders and security agencies whenever the need arises.
“A gate is only one aspect of security. The real strength of every community lies in the vigilance, unity and cooperation of its people. When residents work together, support security agencies and remain watchful, criminals will have no place to thrive,” he said.
AKOD also clarified that there is no law in Lagos State prohibiting community gates, provided they do not obstruct the constitutional right of citizens to freedom of movement. He therefore encouraged communities to continue embracing lawful and well-managed security initiatives that enhance public safety.

Reaffirming his administration’s support for community-driven development, the council boss appealed to landlords, tenants, artisans and business owners to promptly pay their security levies, stressing that sustainable funding is essential for maintaining security infrastructure and ensuring effective community policing.
The Chairman further applauded the leadership of the Anifowose Landlords and Tenants Association, especially its Chairperson, Mrs. Stella Banjo, alongside the Baale of Anifowose and other stakeholders, for demonstrating transparency, accountability and commitment throughout the execution of the nearly ₦10 million security project.
He described the initiative as a model worthy of emulation by other communities across Ikeja Local Government, adding that partnerships between government and residents remain the most effective strategy for building safer neighbourhoods.
Responding on behalf of the community, the Baale of Anifowose, Chief Semiu Anifowose, expressed profound appreciation to AKOD for his unwavering support towards improving security and enhancing the welfare of residents. He assured the Chairman of the community’s continued cooperation with the local government in sustaining peace, security and development.
The commissioning ceremony attracted a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the League of Imams, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), youth leaders, community stakeholders and the Councillor representing the ward, Hon. Idris Salami, all of whom commended the initiative as a significant step toward strengthening grassroots security and fostering a safer environment for residents.
