…Leads 2026 Lagos Tree Planting Exercise, Calls for Collective Responsibility

Òdì-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, Lagos–The Executive Chairman of Òdì-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Dr. Seyi Jakande, has warned that continued environmental neglect and disregard for nature pose a serious threat to humanity, urging residents to embrace collective responsibility in safeguarding the environment.
Hon Jakande made the call on Tuesday, July 14, during the 2026 Lagos State Tree Planting Day exercise held at Ajenifuja Primary School, Kosybethel Primary School, and Christ Central Primary School within the council area.
The exercise, themed “Trees for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility,” brought together pupils, community leaders, government officials, and other stakeholders who participated in the annual environmental initiative aimed at promoting sustainability and combating climate change.
Speaking at the event, the council chairman lamented the increasing impact of environmental degradation, noting that harmful environmental practices and indiscriminate deforestation have contributed to global warming, rising sea levels, and the gradual extinction of plant and animal species.
He stressed that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility, calling on residents, developers, and institutions to comply with environmental regulations and actively support conservation efforts.
“If we want an environment that enchants us, we must adopt a total approach by ensuring everyone plays their part,” Jakande stated
Highlighting Lagos State’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the chairman noted that over 6.5 million trees have been planted across the state over the years, adding that thousands more would be planted in 2026 to strengthen climate resilience and improve the ecosystem.

He emphasized that trees remain essential to cleaner air, water conservation, soil preservation, biodiversity protection, and the overall well-being of communities.
Jakande reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a greener and healthier Òdì-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA through the HEWA Agenda: Service to the People, Prosperity for All, pledging sustained investment in environmental protection and sustainable development initiatives.
The tree planting exercise was attended by the Vice Chairman, Secretary to the Local Government (SLG), Council Manager, Chief of Staff, Leader and Members of the Legislative Arm, Members of the Executive Council, Head of the Environment Department and council management staff
Others are the APC Chairman of Òdì-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, the Community Development Committee (CDC) Chairman, and other critical stakeholders, all of whom joined in planting trees to demonstrate their commitment to a cleaner and greener environment.
The annual Lagos State Tree Planting Day remains one of the state’s flagship environmental programmes, designed to mitigate the effects of climate change, promote environmental awareness, and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
