Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has unveiled a comprehensive strategy aimed at transforming Nnewi into a modern commercial and industrial hub, signaling a renewed push to revitalize critical infrastructure and unlock the city’s economic potential.
The governor disclosed this during an inspection tour of key locations across Nnewi, where he assessed abandoned public assets, underutilized facilities and strategic sites earmarked for redevelopment.
A major highlight of the visit was the Nkwo Nnewi Triangle shopping complex, a project that has remained uncompleted and inactive for 17 years.
Expressing dissatisfaction over the prolonged abandonment of the facility, Soludo pledged that his administration would take immediate steps to restore the complex and return it to productive use.
He noted that public infrastructure established to stimulate commerce and improve the welfare of citizens should not be left to deteriorate through years of neglect.
The governor also inspected the Post Office area and the High Court premises, where he outlined plans to incorporate the facilities into a broader urban renewal framework designed to improve accessibility, efficiency and public service delivery.
As part of efforts to support the city’s growing workforce and expanding economy, Soludo evaluated potential sites for housing developments. He emphasized that quality residential infrastructure remains essential to sustaining growth and attracting investment.
The governor further revealed that his administration is identifying and mapping underutilized open spaces across Nnewi for conversion into public parks, recreational centres and commercial facilities that will enhance the city’s appeal and economic productivity.
According to him, the initiative goes beyond rehabilitating physical structures and is focused on creating opportunities, stimulating commerce and restoring Nnewi’s position as a leading industrial and commercial centre.
“Our strategy is to unlock the hidden value of Nnewi by transforming dormant assets into productive spaces that benefit residents and businesses alike,” he said.
Soludo assured residents that visible construction and redevelopment activities would commence in the coming weeks, marking a significant step in the city’s transformation agenda.
Investigator news reports that the inspection tour was attended by the Commissioner for Works, Arch. Okey Ezeobi; Commissioner for Housing, Architect Henry Arinze; Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi; and the mayors of Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Local Government Areas, among other government officials.
