The Kogi State Government has commended security operatives for their bravery and swift intervention in foiling an attempted mass abduction of students writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Iluke Community, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, while expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives recorded during the attack.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the government described the incident as a cowardly assault carried out by criminal elements who disguised themselves in military uniforms to gain the trust of residents before unleashing violence on the community.
The attack, which claimed the lives of three residents, has thrown the Iluke Community and the entire Bunu District into mourning.
The government extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and assured them that efforts are ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Fanwo disclosed that the attackers invaded the community and disrupted an ongoing WAEC examination, attempting to force students into the bush in what appeared to be a planned mass abduction. However, the prompt response of security personnel changed the course of events.
According to the Commissioner, security operatives engaged the criminals in a fierce gun battle, successfully rescuing all the students unharmed and preventing what could have become one of the most devastating abductions in recent times.
“The courage, professionalism and superior firepower displayed by the military, local vigilantes, hunters and other security personnel saved innocent lives and protected the future of our children,” he stated.
During the operation, one of the bandits was neutralised, while several others reportedly fled with gunshot wounds.
Security agencies have since launched an intensive manhunt for the fleeing suspects and are determined to ensure every individual connected to the attack faces the full weight of the law.
The government praised the sacrifice and patriotism of the security forces, describing their actions as a shining example of commitment to duty and national service.
While assuring residents of enhanced security measures in the area, Fanwo said the government is working closely with relevant security agencies to strengthen surveillance and prevent a recurrence of such attacks.
He urged members of the public to remain calm, vigilant and supportive of security efforts by providing timely and credible information that could assist ongoing operations.
Reaffirming the state’s resolve to confront criminality, the Commissioner declared that Kogi would not surrender to terror or intimidation.
“Kogi State remains committed to protecting the lives and property of its citizens. Those who seek to undermine our peace and security will continue to face a determined, coordinated and uncompromising response from the government and security agencies,” he said.
The government also reiterated its solidarity with the people of Iluke Community during this difficult period and prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls of the deceased as security operatives intensify efforts to restore calm and bring all those responsible for the attack to justice.
