Lagos, June 21, 2026 (NAN) — The Catholic Church has called on fathers to remain steadfast in fulfilling their responsibilities to their families, assuring them that God has not abandoned them and urging wives and children to appreciate and support them.
The call was made during a Mass held to mark the 2026 Father’s Day celebration at St. Augustine’s Catholic Chaplaincy, Air Base, Ikeja, Lagos.
Delivering the homily, Rev. Fr. Peter Babajida-Audu, Executive Secretary of Caritas Nigeria, said the realities of the modern world demand greater faith, courage and trust in God.
Speaking on the theme, “Fathers Also Cry, but God Has Not Forgotten Them,” the priest noted that many fathers carry burdens that are unseen by others and often endure emotional and financial pressures in silence.
Quoting Jesus’ words to His disciples, “Do not be afraid,” Babajida-Audu said fathers need reassurance and encouragement in the face of mounting challenges.
Drawing lessons from the trials of Prophet Jeremiah, he said many fathers today share similar experiences and struggles.
“Fathers also carry heavy burdens. Fathers also worry. Fathers also cry. Fathers also experience fear. Many go to bed wondering how school fees will be paid and lie awake thinking about rent, food, healthcare and the future of their children,” he said.
According to him, societal expectations often compel men to conceal their struggles and maintain an appearance of strength even when faced with unemployment, financial hardship and loneliness.
“Behind many strong fathers is a heart that is tired. Behind many smiles are hidden tears, and behind many successes are untold sacrifices,” he said.
The cleric noted that the situation is particularly evident among military and security personnel, who frequently serve far from their families while bearing responsibilities others may never fully understand.
“A soldier may stand confidently in uniform and serve in difficult locations, yet he worries about his family and children. That is why Jesus says to fathers, ‘Do not be afraid’—not because life is easy or problems do not exist, but because God has not abandoned you,” he said.
Babajida-Audu urged children to be kind to their fathers and called on wives to appreciate and pray for their husbands, stressing that fathers deserve love, understanding and support for the sacrifices they make for their families.
