The Delta State Police Command has detained and transferred an officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja following the fatal shooting of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.
The Command said the incident happened on April 26, 2026, and involved the death of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, operatives attached to Area Command Effurun had responded to intelligence reports from members of the public that the deceased was apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
Police officers were immediately deployed to the scene to take the suspect into custody. However, the officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly violated Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force by discharging his firearm, which led to the suspect’s death.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the incident and ordered the immediate arrest of the officer.
The Command said ASP Nuhu Usman was first moved to the State Headquarters in Asaba, where he was queried, before being transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for immediate disciplinary action and possible prosecution.
The police command reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law, professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights, stressing that it has zero tolerance for recklessness and extra-judicial conduct.
CP Oyeniyi also condoled with the family of the deceased, Mene Ogidi, assuring them that justice would be served.
He appealed to residents and members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, adding that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the officer responsible is brought to justice.
