Oto-Awori, Lagos–The Executive Chairman of Oto-Awori Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Kareem Azeez Abiodun, has issued a stern warning to developers and property owners to adhere strictly to approved building standards and regulations following the collapse of an uncompleted two-storey building at Baba Kudus Bus Stop, Imude.
Hon. Abiodun gave the warning on Tuesday when he paid an on-the-spot assessment visit to the site of the incident to evaluate the extent of the damage and sympathise with residents of the area.
The Chairman expressed relief that no casualties were recorded, describing the development as fortunate despite the unfortunate collapse of the structure.
He stressed that the incident should serve as a wake-up call to all developers, contractors and landlords to prioritise safety by complying with the Lagos State Building Regulations and engaging qualified professionals in every stage of construction.
According to him, cutting corners during building projects puts lives and property at risk and will not be tolerated.
“Let this serve as a warning to all developers and landlords: Build right, build safe and follow due process. The safety of our people remains our top priority,” Hon. Abiodun stated.
The Council Chairman further disclosed that Oto-Awori LCDA is collaborating with the relevant Lagos State agencies to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the building collapse, assuring residents that every necessary step would be taken to prevent a recurrence.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting safe construction practices, enforcing compliance with building regulations and protecting the lives and property of all residents across the LCDA.
Hon. Abiodun also urged members of the public to promptly report any building project suspected to be structurally unsafe or not in compliance with approved standards, noting that safeguarding the community requires the collective responsibility of government, developers and residents alike.
