President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged members of the All Progressives Congress to embrace unity, fairness and sportsmanship as the party begins its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2026 general elections.

In a statement released from the State House, President Tinubu described the commencement of the primaries as a historic milestone for the APC as it prepares for its fourth electoral cycle since inception.

He noted that the party was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, sacrifice and selflessness, stressing that those values must continue to guide members during the exercise.

The President stated that the primaries, beginning with the House of Representatives contests and ending with the presidential primaries scheduled for May 25, 2026, are beyond the selection of candidates, describing them as a test of the party’s unity, resilience and collective strength.

Tinubu commended ongoing efforts by party leaders to adopt consensus arrangements in line with the Electoral Act and the APC constitution, saying such moves would reduce tension and strengthen internal cohesion.

However, he maintained that where consensus fails, party members must conduct themselves peacefully and democratically during the contests.
He advised aspirants and delegates to avoid rancour and divisive politics, urging winners to remain humble in victory while encouraging unsuccessful contestants to accept outcomes in good faith and continue contributing to the growth of the party.

The President also appealed to party leaders, governors and stakeholders to ensure fairness and provide a level playing field for all aspirants, noting that credible and transparent primaries would strengthen confidence within the party.

Tinubu further stressed the need for greater inclusion of women and youths in the political process, calling on delegates and leaders to give special consideration to both demographics during the primaries.

He equally warned security agencies, especially the Police, to remain neutral and professional throughout the exercise, emphasizing that their role should strictly be to maintain peace and order.

The President wished all aspirants success in the primaries and expressed optimism that the eventual candidates would work together for the victory of the APC in the forthcoming general elections.
