Nigeria’s hopes of securing a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will face a stern challenge after the Super Eagles were drawn into a difficult qualifying group alongside Tanzania, Madagascar, and Guinea-Bissau.

The three-time African champions, who reached the semi-finals of the last AFCON tournament, are expected to battle fiercely for qualification as only one automatic ticket is available in the group due to Tanzania’s status as one of the tournament co-hosts.

According to CAF regulations, the top two teams from each qualifying group will advance to the competition, except in groups containing host nations. With Tanzania already guaranteed a place at the tournament, Nigeria and the other teams will compete for the lone remaining qualification slot.

Although the Super Eagles remain favourites to progress, Eric Chelle’s side will need to avoid complacency, particularly against Madagascar, who are considered their biggest rivals in the group.

Madagascar famously defeated Nigeria 2-0 during the 2019 AFCON, the last meeting between both sides, and the Baréa will be aiming to cause another upset.

Having already missed out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, pressure will be high on the Super Eagles to ensure they do not miss another major international tournament.

Investigator news reports that the AFCON 2027 qualifiers are scheduled to run from September 2026 to March 2027, while the tournament itself will take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
