The Kogi State Government has hailed the Nigerian Army for arresting eight suspected illegal miners and recovering mining equipment around Girinya Community Local Jetty and the Agbaja/Kakanda forest axis in Lokoja Local Government Area.
The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, gave the commendation in a statement on Saturday, describing the operation as a clear demonstration of the commitment of security agencies to safeguarding the state’s security, economy and environment.
Fanwo said the suspects were apprehended following credible intelligence on the movement of suspected illegal miners and equipment from Girinya towards Agbaja/Kakanda forest for alleged illegal mining.
He commended troops of the 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army, for their swift response, adding that the arrest and recovery will boost efforts to curb illegal mining in the state.
According to him, government is worried about the activities of illegal miners who exploit the state’s mineral resources without authorisation, thereby posing risks to the environment, public safety and orderly development of the mining sector.
The Commissioner said the administration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo will continue to support legitimate mining activities that create jobs, generate revenue and drive economic growth, while ensuring that illegal operators are brought to justice.
He urged residents and communities to sustain their support by providing credible information to security agencies on suspicious movements, noting that community intelligence remains key to maintaining peace and security.
Fanwo assured Kogites that government will continue to collaborate with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to protect lives, secure communities and safeguard natural resources.
He advised those involved in illegal mining to desist and embrace lawful operations in line with extant mining regulations.
He added that the suspects and the recovered equipment are currently in custody of security authorities for further investigation and necessary action.
