President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately take legal steps to vacate a court order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government, citing the need to safeguard the integrity of the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
In a statement issued from the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday, the President said he became aware that the EFCC had obtained a court order on August 5, 2026, freezing the state’s accounts.
While reaffirming his unwavering support for the independence of anti-corruption agencies, Tinubu expressed concern over the timing of the action, saying it could create the impression that the Federal Government was attempting to influence the electoral process.
The President noted that although he had no prior knowledge of the EFCC’s move, actions taken by federal institutions are often attributed to the Presidency, making it necessary for him to clarify his position.
Tinubu reiterated that since assuming office, he has consistently allowed anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies to perform their statutory duties independently, professionally, and without political interference, stressing that strong democratic institutions are essential to good governance and the rule of law.
He explained that institutions established by law must be allowed to exercise their constitutional responsibilities without requiring presidential approval for operational decisions.
However, he maintained that the timing of the EFCC’s action, coming just days before the Osun governorship election, was inappropriate.
According to the President, no action by any federal agency should create the impression that the Federal Government is using state institutions to interfere with a democratic election.
“Osun State is only a few days away from its gubernatorial election. Therefore, nothing ought to be done to give an impression that the EFCC or indeed any other agency of the Federal Government is being used to interfere with the election,” he said.
Tinubu added that preserving public confidence in the nation’s democratic process remains paramount, emphasizing that the credibility, fairness, and integrity of the Osun governorship election must not be undermined by any government action.
Consequently, the President directed the EFCC to immediately approach the court to vacate the order freezing the Osun State Government’s accounts and discontinue all related legal proceedings against the state in connection with the matter.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions while ensuring that anti-corruption efforts remain transparent, impartial, and free from political considerations.
