LAGOS – The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rescued three victims trapped in a multiple-vehicle collision after a runaway truck reportedly suffered brake failure along the LASU–Isheri Road at Iyana School, inward Igando.
The accident, which briefly disrupted traffic on the busy corridor, involved a MACK flatbed truck, a Toyota Sienna and two commercial tricycles.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck experienced a catastrophic brake failure, causing the driver to lose control before crashing into the other vehicles in a chain-reaction collision.
LASTMA officials, who were on routine traffic surveillance and operational patrol in the area, responded swiftly by activating the agency’s emergency response protocol.
Their prompt intervention led to the successful rescue of three trapped occupants, prevented further collisions and ensured the rapid restoration of traffic flow.
Working in collaboration with officers of the Iba Police Division, LASTMA coordinated the evacuation of the damaged vehicles and cleared the accident scene, preventing prolonged gridlock and reducing the risk of secondary crashes.
Three occupants—one man and two women—sustained varying degrees of severe fracture injuries during the collision.
The victims were safely extricated from the wreckage by LASTMA officers and other emergency responders before being rushed to El-Shaddai Hospital, where they are currently receiving specialised medical treatment.
The vehicles involved in the crash included a MACK flatbed truck, a Toyota with registration number FGC 80 XE, and a TVS commercial tricycle bearing registration number LSR 604 QP.
Throughout the rescue operation, LASTMA traffic officers remained on ground to regulate vehicular movement, secure the accident scene and ensure the smooth restoration of traffic along the LASU–Isheri Road corridor.
Commending the professionalism, courage and rapid response of the emergency team, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, praised the officers for their dedication to saving lives and maintaining order despite the challenging circumstances.
He urged motorists, particularly operators of articulated and heavy-duty vehicles, to conduct thorough mechanical inspections before embarking on any journey, stressing the importance of ensuring that braking systems and other critical components are in optimal condition.
According to him, routine preventive maintenance remains essential in reducing avoidable road crashes and improving road safety across Lagos State.
Bakare-Oki also called on all motorists to obey traffic regulations, exercise caution while driving and promptly report road emergencies through LASTMA’s toll-free emergency short code 3367 to enable the agency’s emergency response teams to intervene without delay.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives, ensuring free vehicular movement and responding swiftly to emergencies through sustained collaboration with security and other emergency agencies across Lagos State.
