A potentially devastating fire disaster was averted on Saturday after the swift intervention of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service following a gas tanker fire at the Owode Elede area along Ikorodu Road.
The incident involved a six-tyre mini gas tanker that reportedly developed a mechanical fault while travelling inward Ikorodu. During emergency assessment, responders discovered that compressed gas was leaking from the vehicle.
Moments later, the escaping gas ignited, sparking a fire around the tanker.
Responding without delay, LASTMA’s Rescue and Recovery Team joined forces with firefighters to contain the blaze before it could spread to nearby vehicles, businesses and surrounding infrastructure.
Their coordinated efforts prevented what could have become a major fire disaster in the busy corridor.
Despite the emergency operation, traffic disruption was kept to a minimum as LASTMA officers immediately activated a traffic management plan by opening an alternative route through a serviceable lane alongside the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor.
The arrangement ensured that motorists continued to move with minimal delays while emergency teams battled the fire.
Commending the professionalism of all responders, the General Manager of LASTMA described the successful operation as another demonstration of the agency’s preparedness to respond swiftly to emergencies across Lagos State.
He noted that the prompt collaboration between traffic officials and firefighters was crucial in preventing loss of lives and extensive damage to property.
He also advised motorists to always obey traffic regulations, remain patient during emergency situations and cooperate fully with traffic and rescue personnel to enable quick and effective response operations.
