The Presidency has firmly denied widespread reports alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is planning constitutional amendments to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia Law in the Northern region.
Describing the report as entirely false and misleading, the Presidency said the viral publication was the handiwork of desperate political actors bent on creating confusion, inciting tension, and destabilising the country ahead of the forthcoming general elections.
According to the statement, President Tinubu has no intention of sending any bill code-named “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly, contrary to claims circulating on social media and other online platforms.
The Presidency stressed that constitutional amendment in Nigeria is a rigorous legal process that cannot be manipulated at the whim of any individual or institution. It explained that any constitutional amendment requires the approval of two-thirds of members in both chambers of the National Assembly, as well as endorsement by at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.
It further noted that President Tinubu remains committed to strengthening economic reforms, improving governance, and delivering meaningful dividends of democracy to Nigerians rather than engaging in divisive political distractions.
The statement urged Nigerians to disregard the fake report in its entirety, warning that misinformation and politically motivated propaganda are likely to increase as political campaigns gather momentum ahead of the January 2026 general elections.
The Presidency also called on citizens to remain vigilant and avoid spreading unverified information capable of threatening national unity, peace, and stability.
