The All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives primary elections held across Imo State on Saturday, May 16, 2026, have triggered widespread reactions among party members, political observers, and residents ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The primaries produced major political upsets as four serving members of the House of Representatives failed to secure the APC tickets needed to seek re-election, signaling a dramatic shift in the political landscape of the state.
Investigator news reports that out of the ten lawmakers currently representing Imo State in the House of Representatives, eight are members of the APC, while two belong to the Action Peoples Party (APP).
However, following the conclusion of the party’s primaries, only four of the eight APC lawmakers succeeded in clinching return tickets for the 2027 elections.
The outcome has continued to generate intense debate across the state, with many party faithful describing the exercise as a reflection of the changing mood within the party and among constituents.
While some political stakeholders argued that the defeated lawmakers suffered the consequences of poor constituency representation and inadequate grassroots connection, others maintained that zoning arrangements and internal political understandings heavily influenced the results in several constituencies.
Analysts believe the development sends a strong message to public office holders about the importance of performance, accessibility, and maintaining strong ties with the electorate.
According to several APC members, the primaries have once again demonstrated that political positions are temporary and that elected officials must continually justify the confidence reposed in them by the people through effective representation and visible developmental projects.
The exercise has also reshaped political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections, with newly emerged candidates expected to intensify consultations and mobilization efforts in preparation for the main polls.
Among the lawmakers who lost their re-election tickets are:
Chike Okafor, representing Okigwe South Federal Constituency, who was defeated by Hon. Chief Jonas Okeke,Miriam Onuoha, representing Okigwe North Federal Constituency, who lost her third-term ambition to Hon. Uche Emma Agasu.
Harrison Nwadike, representing Isu/Njaba/Nkwerre/Nwangele Federal Constituency, who was defeated by Chief Cosmos Maduba and Emeka Martins Chinedu, representing Ahiazu/Ezinihitte Federal Constituency, who lost to Chief Chukwudi Anyanwuocha.
Political observers say the APC primaries in Imo State may have set the tone for a highly competitive 2027 electoral contest, as both returning lawmakers and newly emerged candidates prepare for the next stage of the political battle.
