The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Saturday rescued a commercial motorcyclist and his passenger following a serious road traffic accident along the Iyana-Iba Flyover inward Volkswagen on the Badagry Expressway.
The accident involved a Lexus saloon car with registration number SMK 504 KH, a commercial motorcycle, and a Toyota Corolla marked KTU 308 HN.
According to preliminary reports, the driver of the Lexus vehicle allegedly rammed into the commercial motorcycle while the rider was illegally operating on the restricted flyover corridor, contrary to the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Laws of 2018.
The force of the collision reportedly pushed the motorcycle into a Toyota Corolla positioned ahead, resulting in a multiple-vehicle crash.
As a result of the impact, the motorcyclist and his passenger sustained severe injuries, including multiple fractures and other bodily wounds.
LASTMA officials monitoring traffic activities around the Iyana-Iba axis swiftly responded to the incident by securing the accident scene to prevent further crashes and ensure smooth rescue operations along the busy corridor.
The injured victims were immediately evacuated from the scene for urgent medical attention.
Passersby, alongside the drivers of the two vehicles involved in the accident, also joined rescue efforts by conveying the injured victims to Oyems Hospital, Iyana-Iba, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, sympathized with the injured victims and wished them speedy recovery.
He, however, reiterated the state government’s ban on commercial motorcycles operating on restricted routes, especially highways and flyovers, warning that repeated violations by operators continue to endanger public safety and disrupt orderly transportation within Lagos State.
Bakare-Oki further urged commercial motorcyclists to strictly comply with traffic regulations and avoid prohibited routes in order to safeguard lives and property across the state.
