Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has reacted to the controversy surrounding the viral display of red underwear by a group of young women during a rally held in honour of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu.
The governor firmly denied any involvement in the incident, stating that he neither knew about it nor approved of such actions.
The rally, which took place over the weekend in Kano, sparked widespread reactions after videos surfaced online showing the women publicly displaying red underwear.
PpReports had alleged that the act was part of an empowerment programme backed by the Kano State Government.
Speaking during a special prayer session at the Government House, Governor Yusuf dismissed the claims and distanced himself from the programme.
He also condemned the display, describing it as inappropriate and contrary to the cultural and religious values of Kano people.
According to the governor, he was carrying on with official duties when he was informed of what had happened.
“You have heard what happened. We were going about our normal activities when I was informed that some young women displayed inappropriate items. I was not aware of it,” he said.
He added that such behaviour goes against the traditions of the state and the teachings of Islam, stressing that his administration strongly condemns it.
