The Kogi State Government has condemned the attack on an orphanage and school facility in Zariagi, along the Kabba Junction axis of Lokoja, while commending security operatives for rescuing 15 victims during a swift rescue operation.
The government described the incident as unfortunate and avoidable, assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to secure the release of those still in captivity.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, confirmed that the rescued victims were among those abducted when suspected gunmen invaded the facility late on April 26, 2026.
The affected facility, identified as Dahallukitab Group of School, was reportedly operating without registration in a remote bushy area, unknown to relevant authorities and security agencies.
According to the statement, the attackers kidnapped 23 pupils alongside the wife of the proprietor before security personnel launched an immediate response.
Operatives led by the Nigeria Police Force in Kogi State, with support from other agencies, were said to have acted promptly, leading to the rescue of 15 victims.
Fanwo praised the gallantry, professionalism, and coordinated efforts of the security agencies, noting that their timely intervention greatly reduced the impact of the attack.
He assured that security forces are intensifying efforts to rescue the remaining victims and bring those responsible to justice.
The Commissioner also raised concerns over the operation of unregistered orphanages, schools, and similar institutions in isolated areas, warning that such practices expose innocent children to avoidable risks.
He urged operators of such facilities to comply with all government regulations and engage relevant authorities for proper security assessment and protection.
The Kogi State Government reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of lives and property, stressing that security operations remain active until normalcy is fully restored.
