On Monday, the Nigeria Super Eagles made history by defeating Sao Tome and Principe 10-0 in Agadir, Morocco, in their second 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. The 10-1 defeat of Dahomey, now Benin Republic, by the then Red Devils in a Kwame Nkrumah Cup match in Lagos on November 28, 1959 was consigned to history.
Prior to the game, in which Victor Osimhen scored four goals and Terem Moffi of France added a brace, the Super Eagles had never beaten a team by such a large margin, setting a new record under Coach Jose Peseiro.
Meanwhile, two former Super Eagles midfielders, Henry Nwosu and Friday Ekpo, have thumped up the team.

Even as he noted that the team’s glory days were gradually returning, Nwosu said that the players did well.
“It was a nice result from the boys; they didn’t care about the opponent’s strength; they just wanted to win.”
“It shows that they have begun to imbibe the new coach’s tactics, and I also sense that the glory days are returning,” he told our correspondent.

“I understand that some will now refer to it as Oyinbo magic, but we had our chance as indigenous coaches, but we blew it.”
“All we can do now is pray for him and ask him to build on this as we strive to qualify for the AFCON and even win it,” he added.
Despite the victory, former Julius Berger FC Team Manager Mactony Taiwo believes there is still room for improvement.
In a post-match press conference at the Stade Adrar in Agadir, Morocco, Taiwo urged the players and officials not to get too excited about the win and instead focus on the areas where there were some hiccups.
“There are some lapses in the team.” These are the areas where coaches and even players should focus their efforts in the coming matches.
“The match is over, but there is still room for improvement, and we must not get carried away with this victory,” Taiwo said after the game.
