“They were travelling in their official NIWA branded Hilux when they were attacked for straying into Biafra land in a Nigeria branded sport utility vehicle,” said Prince Adeyanju Adewale, President-General of MWUN, in confirming the unfortunate incident. One of the officials rushed to the Nnewi General Hospital had three bullets removed from his neck by the medical team.

“We applaud NIWA’s Managing Director, Dr. George Moghalu, for his prompt response, which allowed our injured members to receive medical attention quickly.” The incessant, unprovoked, and persistent attacks on innocent Nigerians and the working masses by those claiming to be unknown gunmen are not only extrajudicial and barbaric, but also a pointer to the security apparatus’ and the state’s failure to live up to their primary function of providing protection for its citizens at this very sensitive time in the lives of Nigerians.

“The Nigerian Maritime Workers Union wishes to appeal to the government to fulfil its primary responsibility of ensuring the security of its citizens, particularly the working masses who are forced to travel from one state to another in order to conduct their business.”

“Governments’ apparent insensitivity to the suffering plight of their citizens and working classes is an affront not only to our need to survive, but also to our right to life and existence.”
