It was a proud moment for Nigeria as young players from Kogi State led the country’s charge at the just-concluded African Youth Table Tennis Championship and African Cup in Accra, Ghana, winning multiple medals and showcasing the strength of grassroots sports development.

The Kogi contingent delivered consistent, high-level performances against top junior players across Africa, reinforcing the state’s reputation as a breeding ground for future national and continental champions.

The biggest highlight came in the U-15 Boys’ Doubles at the African Youth Championship, where Kogi’s *Joseph Victor and Joseph Marvelous* combined to win *gold*. The pair later teamed up with *Samson Joshua* and *Umar Ayoola* of Lagos State to secure *silver* in the U-15 Boys’ Team Event.

Samson Joshua stood out as Nigeria’s most decorated player. He won *bronze* in U-15 Boys’ Singles, added another *bronze* in U-15 Boys’ Doubles with Umar Ayoola, and partnered *Chinoye Okafor* of Abia State to claim *bronze* in the U-15 Mixed Doubles.

At the African Cup, Joshua added yet another *bronze* in U-15 Boys’ Singles. Kogi’s *Ize Aziza Sezuo* also made the podium with a *bronze* in U-15 Girls’ Singles.

Officials say the results are the product of years of structured training, regular tournament exposure, and dedicated coaching. *Coach Friday Abah* led the technical team and was widely praised for preparing the athletes for the demands of elite competition.

*Dr. Shaibu D. Mohammed*, Chairman of the Kogi State Table Tennis Association, was also commended for his financial backing, motivation, and continued investment in grassroots development. His support has created clear pathways for young players to train and compete at the highest level.

The medal haul has brought pride to Kogi State and Nigeria, and further proves that sustained investment in youth sports can produce athletes capable of competing globally.

With continued support, the players, coaches, and association believe these teenagers can progress to the African Games, Commonwealth Games, Olympics, and World Championships.

The Kogi State Table Tennis Association, the athletes, Coach Abah, Dr. Mohammed, and the families who supported them have all been applauded for this remarkable achievement.
