Fear has gripped residents of Enugu’s Awkunanaw axis, the state capital, in the aftermath of Thursday’s attack on a police checkpoint at MTD, Gariki by suspected gunmen.
Three police officers were feared dead during a gunfight between law enforcement and suspected criminals.
The incident occurred just a few days after hoodlums stormed a drinking establishment in the area and killed a vigilante and the wife of a local government councillor.
Confirming the attack, State Police Public Relations Officer Daniel Ndukwe told reporters that there was a shooting, but he couldn’t say whether there were any police casualties.
“Yes, I learned that masked gunmen fired gunshots there this morning, but I can’t confirm whether any police officers were killed.”
