The Oto-Awori Local Council Development Area (LCDA), led by Hon. Kareem Azeez Abiodun, has partnered with the Lagos State Government and the Federal Government to implement a sensitization programme aimed at reducing maternal and neonatal mortality in the community.
The initiative, executed under the Hope Health Project/MAMII, focused on educating residents on the availability and use of emergency medical transport services for expectant mothers and newborns.
Representing the Executive Chairman at the event, the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Tekobo Ezekiel Ajose, said the programme reflects the council’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and improving access to quality medical services for residents.
The event attracted top council officials, including the Leader of the House, Hon. Sulaiman Awoyemi, alongside other council functionaries.
Ajose noted that under the leadership of Hon. Kareem Azeez Abiodun, the council has continued to prioritize healthcare development through improved infrastructure, increased access to services, and proactive health initiatives.
In his welcome address, the Supervisor for Health, Hon. Sanni Kazeem Oluwasegun, described the programme as a major step toward bridging gaps in maternal healthcare.
“Today, we take a significant step towards ensuring that no mother or child loses their life due to lack of emergency medical transportation services,” he said, while appreciating the Lagos State Government and other partners for their collaboration.
Also speaking, the Lagos State Focal Person for MAMII, Mrs. Orukotan Olubukanla, highlighted the life-saving impact of the initiative, noting that the programme goes beyond healthcare delivery.
“With this initiative, we are not just saving lives, we are empowering families and building a healthier community. Every expectant mother and child deserves access to quality care, and we are committed to making that a reality,” she stated.
Residents were also informed about emergency medical transport numbers — 112 and 767 — to be used during childbirth emergencies.
The LASAMBUS Focal Person for MAMII, Mrs. Balogun Omosalewa, encouraged residents to take advantage of the services and provide feedback to help improve response efficiency.
The sensitization programme underscores the joint commitment of Oto-Awori LCDA, the Lagos State Government, and the Federal Government to improving maternal healthcare and reducing preventable deaths, marking another step toward building a healthier and safer community.
