In a commendable display of professionalism and swift response, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, averted a potential catastrophe after quickly containing a truck fire that broke out late Saturday night along the Secretariat inward Otedola Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The incident involved a Mack truck transporting an empty 20-foot container, which suddenly caught fire while in motion, posing an immediate threat to nearby road users and critical infrastructure in the area.
LASTMA operatives, demonstrating remarkable efficiency and skill, rushed to the scene and successfully rescued the truck driver, who escaped unharmed.
Understanding the risks associated with such a fire, particularly in the high-traffic Otedola Bridge area, both LASTMA and the Fire and Rescue Service worked in close coordination to suppress the blaze before it could spread further, preventing a potential large-scale disaster.
Thanks to the agencies’ rapid action, the fire was extinguished quickly, and traffic flow was restored without major disruptions, ensuring minimal inconvenience for commuters and protecting the economic activities along this busy corridor.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, praised the officers for their bravery and professionalism, stressing the importance of maintaining high operational standards even in high-pressure situations.
He also reiterated LASTMA’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property on Lagos roads.
Motorists are advised to regularly check their vehicles’ mechanical and electrical systems to prevent such incidents.
