Indukapo Ogede, an ex-militant leader and the head of operations at Darlon Oil and Gas Servicing Limited, was assassinated in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State.
Ogede was reported to have been executed Sunday night at a hotel off Tamic road in Okutukutu, where he stays when in Yenagoa.
His assailants, who were armed and dressed in military uniform, were said to have driven into the hotel on Sunday afternoon and paid for three rooms ostensibly as a decoy for their true motive.
According to a hotel source, they later went to the bar to drink while waiting for their target to return from an assignment he went to town to complete.
However, some people close to the deceased at the hotel suspected that something was unusual about the suspected assassins’ behaviour and decided to call him, but he did not pick up the phone because he was driving to the hotel.
According to eyewitness accounts, when they saw his car enter the premises, they ran towards him and shot him twice.
The gunshot caused panic in the hotel and surrounding area, as people fled for safety while the gunmen attempted to flee.
Ogede was rushed to the Glory Land Hospital in Opolo, where he was pronounced dead and his body was transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa.
According to reports, police detectives have been to the hotel to question the management and those who witnessed the shooting.
In a statement, Chief Levi Wilson, Chairman of Darlon Oil and Gas Limited, urged the various law enforcement agencies to investigate the killing and bring the perpetrators to justice so that such an incident does not occur again in the near future.
Wilson described the death as “one too many,” noting that the deceased left behind his parents, wife, and children.
Asinim Butswat, spokesperson for the Bayelsa State Police Command, appealed for calm. He stated that the police are already investigating the incident.
