A flood brought on by heavy rains that washed away shops, electric poles, and cables in the market has left some traders at the Relief Market in the Anambra region of Ogbaru Local Government Area counting their losses.
Mr. David Obidike, the chairman of the market’s caretaker committee, revealed this while showing members of his executive team and news reporters around the portions on Saturday.
“A few days ago, the market’s chief security officer called and informed me that a devastating flood from the Awada Area had carried the market after entering under its Sakamori (drainage) system and uprooting it, wreaking havoc there.
The flood exhumed and damaged telephone cables that were buried underground, as well as large water-borne pipes and about ten shops that were washed away with their contents.
As I speak, the market is in a blackout, and traders are using electricity generators because we haven’t had a power supply for a month and a half since the rainy season began.
Because our market is located in the notorious Upper Iweka axis, hoodlums can easily enter the market through the damaged areas brought on by the erosion threat, he claimed.
He claimed that having a group of committed security personnel was the traders’ only defense against theft.
The extent of the damage was beyond their ability to pay for, so he begged the governor of Anambra, Chukwuma Soludo, and other pertinent authorities for help.
