The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has completed preparations for a 90-day halt in flight operations on runway 18L/36R.
The runway’s closure would aid the authority in completing the installation of a CAT III Airfield Ground Lighting system on the runway, according to a statement signed by its acting general manager of corporate affairs, Faithful Hope-Ivbaze.
On Friday, July 8, 2022, work is anticipated to start on the project.
Despite the temporary closure, the statement said that all regular flight operations would still take place through the runway.
A Notice to Air Missions (NOTAMs) to this effect has already been published and distributed appropriately, according to the statement.
The same runway had been temporarily closed by FAAN on February 10, 2021, following a landing incident involving a Boeing 737 operated by Azman Air with registration 5N SYS and flight ZQ2325. The plane’s tyre apparently burst after landing on the runway.
Similar to this, the aviation authorities worked on runway rehabilitation from May 28 to May 29, 2022, between 0600 and 1300 hours, days after a mangled body was discovered on the road stretch.
On June 4 and 5, 2022, the runway was also shut down.
