Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and a former presidential candidate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has formally joined the Labour Party (LP) to run for president in 2023.
Obi registered as a member of the party in his ward in Anambra State on Friday, according to reports.
Next Tuesday is the party’s presidential primary election, and he is expected to run.

Obi was said to be planning to leave the PDP for the Labour Party on Wednesday.
According to a source, “he is leaving for the Labour Party.”
“The results of the party’s various primaries thus far have revealed who the majority of these delegates are loyal to,” the source said.
“So, he (Obi) is under pressure to leave the PDP for the moneybags, and we are looking for another party to accept him right now.”
Two days before the PDP’s presidential primary, Obi resigned his membership.
He cited recent developments within the opposition party as the reason for his resignation. Obi said he had already informed the chairman of the PDP chapter in his Agulu Ward 2, in Anambra State, in a letter dated May 24, 2022, and addressed to Iyorchia Ayu, the national chairman of the PDP.

“I’m writing to inform you of my resignation from the PDP, which was conveyed to the chairman of Agulu Ward 2, Anaocha LGA, and will take effect on Friday, May 20, 2022.” As a result, I’m writing to inform you that I’m dropping out of the PDP Presidential Primary.
“It has been a great honour for our party to contribute to nation-building efforts.” Unfortunately, recent developments within our party make it practically impossible to continue participating and contributing in such a constructive way,” Obi wrote in the letter.
