Breaking: Court denies Nnamdi Kanu bail application

0 1

The leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, requested bail, but Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has once again rejected his request.

According to reports, Justice Nyako stated when deciding on the bail request that no documents pertaining to Kanu’s departure from Nigeria had been submitted to her court for four years.

She did grant a stay of the criminal proceedings, however, and stated that she would be willing to consider a fresh application for bail.

In addition, Justice Nyako suggested that Kanu’s legal team approach the Court of Appeal regarding the matter of bail.

The judge also rejected Kanu’s request for bail last month. Prior to considering Kanu’s bail request, she stated at the time that the question of his previous absences, dating back to 2017, needed to be resolved. Kanu violated his prior bail terms, she continued, so his current bail application is premature until that is addressed.

The 54-year-old separatist leader has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja since his recapture in Kenya in June 2021.
