On Thursday, President Muhammadu Buhari rejected the Indigenous People of Biafra’s (IPOB) claim that the federal government had treated its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, harshly.
At the Federal High Court in Abuja, Kanu, who was brought back to the nation on June 27 of last year, is currently on trial for an alleged treasonable felony.
The separatist group has persisted in claiming that the Department of State Service (DSS) tortured and otherwise mistreated the activist while they were holding him.
Buhari accused the IPOB leader of making disparaging remarks about Nigerians while residing in Britain during a meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Kigali, Rwanda.
The President refuted the claim that he meddled in the legal proceedings and stated that the court had the final say.
“Nnamdi Kanu felt very secure in Britain and said terrible things about Nigeria,” he said. When he eventually left the United Kingdom, we caught him and took him to court.
“Let him stand by everything he said there. He is accessible to his attorneys. If bail is granted, how can we be sure he won’t jump it again given that he has in the past?
The IPOB leader was asked to defend himself in court after President Buhari last year rejected the South-East leaders’ demand for the IPOB leader’s unconditional release.
Earlier this year, he reiterated the claim while speaking with journalists in Abuja.
