President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on the occasion of his 92nd birthday, describing him as a rare global icon whose life and works have continued to inspire generations across the world.
In a goodwill message issued on Monday, July 13, President Tinubu extolled the celebrated playwright, novelist, poet, essayist and human rights advocate for his immense contributions to literature, democracy and the Nigerian nation.
The President noted that Professor Soyinka belongs to a rare class of exceptional individuals whose courage, intellect and unwavering commitment to justice have left an indelible mark on humanity.
According to President Tinubu, Soyinka has consistently stood against oppression and injustice, choosing to defend truth and the dignity of humanity even in the face of grave personal risks.
Tinubu also celebrated the literary giant’s historic achievement as the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986, describing the feat as a landmark moment not only for Nigeria but for the entire African continent.
He further highlighted the numerous international honours bestowed on the elder statesman over the years, including the Benson Medal from the Royal Society of Literature, the Academy of Achievement Golden Plate Award, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Europe Theatre Prize Special Prize.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, the President recalled Professor Soyinka’s courageous resistance against military dictatorship and his active participation in the struggle to actualise the June 12 mandate, noting that they both stood on the side of democracy during that defining period in the nation’s history.
Describing the literary icon as one of Nigeria’s greatest living treasures, Tinubu thanked Soyinka for his steadfast belief in the Nigerian project and his invaluable counsel on national issues.
“As he marks this birthday, I join millions across the world in celebrating his remarkable influence on generations of writers, scholars and activists, as well as his sacrifices in the service of our nation,” the President stated.
President Tinubu prayed for Professor Soyinka’s continued good health, long life and many more years of impactful service to Nigeria and humanity.
