Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State has called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in protecting the nation’s democratic institutions and to reject actions capable of weakening the country’s democratic foundations.
In his Democracy Day message, Governor Ododo said the occasion provides an opportunity for citizens to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and honour the sacrifices made by patriots who fought for the freedoms and rights enjoyed today.
According to the governor, democracy remains the most credible platform through which citizens exercise their sovereign will, elect leaders, and hold governments accountable.
He noted that despite the challenges confronting the nation, democratic governance continues to provide a framework for peace, development, participation, and the protection of fundamental rights.
Ododo urged Nigerians to embrace the values of tolerance, dialogue, unity, and responsible citizenship, stressing that these principles are essential for sustaining and strengthening democracy.
“On this auspicious occasion of Democracy Day, I heartily congratulate all Nigerians on another milestone in our collective democratic journey.
Today offers us an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of our heroes and the enduring strength of the democratic ideals that continue to shape our nation,” he said.
The governor also congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the celebration, describing him as one of the foremost champions of democracy in Nigeria.
He noted that the President’s political journey reflects the triumph of democratic struggle and commitment to service.
Ododo called on citizens to continue supporting and praying for the country and its leaders, emphasizing that nation-building requires the collective efforts of all Nigerians.
Paying tribute to the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief MKO Abiola, the governor described him as a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic consciousness whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the nation’s current democratic order.
He stated that Abiola’s commitment to justice and democracy, despite personal costs, remains an enduring inspiration to present and future generations.
The governor further reiterated that democracy thrives through active citizen participation and collective responsibility, urging Nigerians to remain united in their pursuit of a peaceful, secure, and prosperous nation.
On behalf of the government and people of Kogi State, Ododo wished Nigerians a memorable Democracy Day celebration and expressed confidence that the country’s democracy would continue to deliver hope, justice, opportunity, and prosperity for all.
