The Kogi State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of the Echane Festival in Ebiraland, citing security concerns and the need to maintain peace across affected communities.
The directive, approved by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, follows intelligence reports indicating that activities associated with the festival could pose threats to public safety and potentially trigger a breakdown of law and order in parts of Kogi Central Senatorial District.
Announcing the decision in a statement on Sunday, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Kingsley Femi Fanwo, said the government had also instructed all security agencies in the state to enforce the suspension strictly.
Fanwo explained that while the administration acknowledges the cultural and historical importance of traditional festivals in preserving the heritage of the people, the protection of lives and property remains its highest priority.
According to the statement, Governor Ododo approved the suspension as a proactive measure aimed at preventing any security breaches and ensuring continued peace in the affected areas.
“The Governor has directed that the Echane Festival be suspended with immediate effect in view of security reports and the need to preserve law and order,” the statement read.
The government further warned that any individual or group found organising, participating in, or promoting activities related to the suspended festival would face legal consequences.
It added that Governor Ododo remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and will continue to take decisive actions necessary to sustain the peace and stability for which Kogi State is known.
The state government also called on traditional rulers, community leaders, opinion leaders, youth groups, and residents to cooperate fully with security agencies and support efforts aimed at maintaining peace and harmony across the affected communities.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the government stressed that security considerations would continue to guide decisions relating to public gatherings and community activities throughout the state.
