The Executive Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area, Dr. Seyi Jakande, has announced plans to enroll 1,000 residents into the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme in partnership with the Lagos State Health Management Agency, as part of efforts to expand access to affordable healthcare within the council.

Dr. Jakande made the disclosure on Wednesday, April 15, during a community and stakeholders engagement organized by the council in collaboration with LASHMA, describing the initiative as a decisive step toward achieving universal healthcare coverage in Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA.

According to the chairman, the initiative is aimed at ensuring that residents, particularly traders, artisans, and low-income households, benefit from quality and affordable healthcare services.

He explained that the Ilera Eko programme, which currently benefits over 1.4 million Lagos residents, offers flexible health plans covering consultations, surgeries, maternal care, physiotherapy, home nursing, and telemedicine through more than 450 accredited healthcare providers across the state.

“Healthcare is the foundation of prosperity. Without good health, no community can thrive,” the chairman said.

Jakande also highlighted ongoing healthcare improvements under his administration’s HEEWA Agenda, noting that several primary healthcare centres have been upgraded across the LCDA.

These include the completion of the Kayode Ultramodern Primary Health Centre, restoration of running water at the SDG facility, installation of a 16KVA solar system at Ayantuga PHC, replacement of water reservoir at Kajol PHC, and repairs at Ajisegiri PHC.

He further disclosed that the council is transitioning to an Electronic Medical Records system to improve service delivery, while another Primary Health Centre is set for commissioning soon.

The Chairman called on stakeholders to support the enrollment drive, stressing the need for collaboration among traditional rulers, market leaders, artisans, and community leaders to ensure successful implementation.

“When stakeholders work together, we create a network that saves lives and secures the future of our community,”.

“In a few days, we will commission another Primary Health Centre. We have renovated facilities, organized free medical outreaches, and strengthened maternal and child health programs. But this registration drive is about ensuring no one is left behind,”

“When our traditional rulers lend their influence, when market leaders mobilize their members, when artisans contribute their skills, and when community leaders guide with wisdom, we create a network of support that saves lives and secures the future,” he stated.

Beyond policy statement,Hon Jakande confirmed that the 1,000 beneficiaries would be identified and enrolled at no cost.

“On Monday, we will start the process of registering and enlisting them on LASHMA to get the benefits,” he said.

“Today is just to sensitise people within the community so they can understand the benefits of this. That is why LASHMA is also on ground to provide detailed information and answer questions,” he added.

Earlier,the Permanent Secretary, LASHMA,Dr.Emmanuella Zamba emphasized the Lagos State Government’s commitment to ensuring accessible and affordable healthcare for all residents.

She reiterated the call of Governor Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for residents to enrol in the scheme while commending the Executive Chairman,Hon. Dr. Oluseyi Lawal Jakande for sponsoring 1,000 vulnerable residents

Dr Zamba highlighted some of the benefits of the scheme, including subsidized healthcare services, annual wellness checks, telemedicine, and emergency care,noting that the scheme has a subscription plan on how to pay so that everyone individual including their family members can benefit from this health insurance scheme.

The Chairman in his address announced that environmental sanitation exercises would commence across all wards on April 25, in line with directives from the Lagos State Government, noting that a sanitation committee would be established to ensure compliance.

He further warned against misuse of roads, revealing that the council has reconstructed 16 roads with drainage systems, urging residents to protect the infrastructure and avoid converting roads into mechanic workshops or blocking them for social events without proper authorization.

Speaking with newsmen after the event,Dr Zamba urged the residents to enrol in the scheme, noting that premiums are set at N15,000 per individual, and N55,000 for a family of four, with flexible options such as the “Pay Small Small” initiative and the Ilera ‘n Tiwa Cooperative Scheme,noting that the current engagement would be followed by a door-to-door campaign and a compliance phase across all councils.

“After this, we will begin a door-to-door campaign to educate residents and drive enrolment. People do not need to die needlessly because they do not have money for healthcare. Healthcare will be affordable and qualitative,” she said.

In addition, she disclosed plans to establish a telemedicine kiosk within the LCDA to improve access, while noting that LASHMA operates a 24-hour customer service platform and community outreach through local radio stations.

Investigator news reports that the meeting was attended by traditional rulers, political representatives, community leaders, market men and women, artisans, and youth representatives, who commended the chairman’s pledge to enroll 1,000 residents, describing it as a bold step toward accessible and affordable healthcare in Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA.

The stakeholders expressed optimism that the initiative would significantly improve healthcare access and strengthen community well-being across the council.
