The Kogi State Government has approved the dualisation of the road leading to the proposed Kogi International Airport as part of efforts to strengthen infrastructure and stimulate economic growth in the state.
The 9.1-kilometre project was awarded to CCECC Construction Company following a competitive bidding process involving five firms.
The company emerged as the preferred contractor after submitting the lowest bid.
Presenting the award certificate in Lokoja, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Transport, Engr. Sagir Abdulsalam, who represented the Commissioner for Works, said the project would link the proposed ultra-modern airport to the state’s existing road network.
Abdulsalam disclosed that the project is expected to be completed within 18 months and forms part of the economic expansion agenda of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo.
He noted that the dualisation would improve connectivity, ease transportation, and attract investors to the state.
According to him, the project will also enhance the movement of goods, services and people along the airport corridor, thereby boosting economic activities and improving the ease of doing business.
“In his magnanimity, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, through the weekly Executive Council meeting, approved and awarded the dualisation of the airport road to the same construction company handling some of the state’s projects,” Abdulsalam stated.
He added that the project would be funded directly by the state government and is expected to create employment opportunities during and after construction.
Responding, the Project Manager of the construction firm, Austin Qi, appreciated the state government for the confidence reposed in the company and assured that the project would be delivered within the stipulated timeframe and according to specifications.
Meanwhile, the state government has commenced payment of compensation to residents of Zariagi, Kabba Junction and Irepeni communities whose lands were acquired for the airport project.
Investigator news reports that affected residents, mostly farmers, have been invited to the Kogi State Bureau of Lands conference room from April 1, 2026, for the payment process.
They are required to present two passport photographs and valid identification such as National Identity Card, Voter’s Card or Driver’s Licence.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo described the contract award as a significant milestone in Governor Ododo’s commitment to linking Kogi State to the global economy through an international airport.
Fanwo expressed confidence in the financial readiness of the state, noting that support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the governor’s financial planning would ensure the successful execution of the project.
He also urged residents to safeguard government infrastructure as the administration continues to invest in critical sectors aimed at improving economic growth and development across the state.
