The Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially has presented flags to its 57 Chairmanship and 376 Councilorship candidates for the July 12 Local Government Elections.
The event was marked by warnings from key party leaders, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, APC Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, and Chairman of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Prince Tajudeen Olusi, urging candidates to prioritize people-centered leadership inspired by the legacy of Obafemi Awolowo.
This was disclosed on Tuesday at the party’s official presentation of candidates for the 2025 local government elections and the flag-off of the campaign, held at the state’s party secretariat in Lagos.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, stated that the event symbolises the beginning of the journey that requires hard work, commitment and unalloyed dedication to service.
He stressed the need for candidates to emulate Awolowo’s legacy, focusing on quality and positive change in the lives of the people, while assuring candidates of the government’s support to help them emerge victorious in the election.
“As we raise the flags today, we are more than happy, but let us remember the values and principles that bind us together for a better future. APC is a party known for progressive movements, and we are not only focused on winning the election but also on bringing about quality and positive change in the lives of the people.
“We must continue in the legacy of President Bola Tinubu. We must let Nigerians know that the APC is here to serve the people, and we must not disappoint them by delivering our promises to solve the problem. We must emulate the sage Obafemi Awolowo, who was known for good works.”
Also speaking,the State Chairman of the APC, Pastor Ojelabi emphasized that no council chairman who underperforms to expect a second term,highlighting the importance of the office to the community.
According to him, the candidate’s administration would be closely monitored by the party if elected into office, saying it wouldn’t be business as usual.
He, however, cautioned the candidates not to maltreat their vice when they get into office, saying they were not a spare tire but a co-pilot.
Lending his voice, one of the GAC member,Olusi emphasised the importance of local government, stating that it is closest to the people and must be taken seriously.
“It’s so sad that today there are lots of hungry people in politics, and that is why the desperation is high. However, I want you to take seriously the work that you will be elected to do and serve the people.
“We urge the candidates to work with those who lost the primaries when they eventually win the election.”
He advised them to promote people’s welfare rather than personal aggrandisement, saying that the office is not meant to enrich them.
“It is a thing of joy that no one who lost at the primary has taken the party to court to challenge the outcome. For those who are candidates and received their flags today, it is incumbent upon you to help us and the party by ensuring that all those who made a sacrifice are carried along. They made a sacrifice by not contesting your victory in court. Pick a supervisor from them; among other roles, there are lots of things you can do with and for them,” he said.
The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,Hon Mudashiru Obasa, urged aggrieved aspirants not to work against the party.
“If you have faith in the party, then whatever the party decides is binding. It’s not about having enemies and trying to frustrate the system. The party is supreme, and its decision must be supported. We must support our party.
“Let’s support the candidates. The next four years are around the corner, and it might be your turn. But if you work against the party, it might affect you later.”
Among those who picked their flags as standard flagbearers are the incumbent chairman of Isolo LCDA, Olasoju Adebayo,confirming him as the party’s standard flag-bearer in the upcoming July 12 local government elections across the 57 LGAs and LCDAs in the state.
Olasoju, alongside his running mate and incumbent vice chairman, Hon. Shakir Sadiq Adeola, was joined at the epochal event held at the Party’s secretariat on ACME Road, Ogba, Lagos by the LGA Chairman, Barr. Gani Bello and other party officials, revered Isolo political leader, Otunba Jide Oni, as well as the seven Councillorship candidates and other stakeholders.
Elated by the party’s reaffirmation of his landslide victory at the primary elections held last month, Olasoju dedicated his candidacy to the entire residents of Isolo LCDA as he appreciated the party leaders for the opportunity to fly the flag yet again.
The council boss reiterated his commitment to upholding the party’s ‘progressive’ ideology in the next four years by building on the qualitative governance he institutionalized in the past four years.
While expressing absolute optimism that APC will cruise to a landslide victory come Saturday 12th July the council boss reaffirmed his readiness to further electioneering activities with the party officials ahead of the fast approaching elections.
In the same vein,his counterpart from Ejigbo LCDA,Hon Taoheed Adebayo Taiwo also received his flag at the Lagos State Party Secretariat—signifying his emergence as the party’s flagbearer for the forthcoming July 12, 2025, Council Elections.
This symbolic presentation marks a renewed mandate and a clear vote of confidence in his people-centered and visionary leadership.It also heralds a new dawn driven by a Renewed Hope Agenda, with the intent to midwife a brighter and more rewarding future for the people of Ejigbo LCDA under his administration.
With proven antecedents and a solid track record of responsive and purposeful governance, Aare TAT stands poised to deepen his developmental agenda—focusing on infrastructure renewal, educational upliftment, improved healthcare delivery, and economic empowerment for residents.
Highlight of the event was presentation of flags to the 57 Chairmanship candidates as the party expressed strong confidence in winning all elective positions in the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) during the forthcoming polls.
Investigator news reports that the July 12 elections will be held in 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas across 377 wards in Lagos State.
