Following a disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the team was held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa and lost 1-2 to Benin Republic, dropping to 5th in their group, four points behind leaders Rwanda, Finidi George resigning his duties as head coach of the Nigerian team,the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has shortlisted three foreign coaches as potential replacements.

The three-man shortlist is led by Marc Brys, the current coach of the Cameroonian national team, who is open to leaving due to a poor relationship with Samuel Eto’o, the president of the football association. Antonio Conceição, the former coach of Cameroon, is also on the list and is seen as the favourite among many due to his impressive record on the continent. Didier Six, the former coach of the Guinean national team, completes the list.

All three candidates will be screened and interviewed for the role after the Sallah break in Nigeria. The NFF is seeking a foreign coach with experience and a strong record to revive the team’s fortunes. The selection process will be closely watched, and the chosen coach will face the task of reviving the team’s fortunes and restoring the confidence of Nigerian football fans.
