In Africa, it seems like coups are on the rise. Soldiers overthrew President Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon, whose family had dominated the country for 55 years, less than a month after the coup in Niger.
According to the coup organisers, Bongo, 64, who succeeded his father Omar in 2009, was placed under house arrest and one of his sons was detained for treason.
The fact that military coups have taken place in five other nations since 2020 is instructive. Burkina Faso saw two coups in eight months, Sudan, Guinea, and Mali had two coups in nine.
There have been 486 military takeovers since 1950, with Africa having the most (214), and at least 106 of them have been successful.
Researchers from the United States Jonathan M. Powell and Clayton L. Thyne estimate that 45 out of the 54 African nations had experienced at least one coup attempt during this time.Africa is perhaps the continent where most coups occur, and the reasons for this are not implausible.
Following the revolution in Gabon, the leaders of Cameroon and Rwanda reorganised their forces and removed some generals in an effort to thwart future coup attempts. – #International #News
