Breaking: Abia State House of Assembly Speaker impeached

According to reports, the House of Assembly of Abia State cast a vote of no confidence in its speaker, Hon. Chinedum Orji, on Tuesday, May 2.

At the time of publication, the specific reasons for Mr. Chinedum’s impeachment remain unclear; however, a senior member of the House from Abia North Senatorial District who preferred not to be named confirmed authoritatively that the action of the legislators was to remove him from office.

The motion to impeach was presented by the Honorable Kennedy Njoku, who represents Osisioma North. The Honorable Ifeanyi Uchendu, who represents Ohafia South, provided the motion with a second.

The national assembly election for Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency was held on February 25, and Mr. Orji, who was representing Umuahia Central State Constituency, did not win.

Obi Aguocha, the candidate for the Labour Party (LP), defeated Mr. Orji in the most recent general elections that were just finished. Mr. Orji is the son of former Governor Theodore Orji.

The operatives of the Nigerian Police Force have reportedly taken control of the entrance gate of the State Assembly in order to forestall any potential breakdown in law and order that may occur.
