In Edo, police kill notorious armed robber

The Edo State Police Command says its officers killed a suspected notorious armed robber in Benin City, the state capital.

Ms Jennifer Iwegbu, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer in Edo, made the announcement in a statement on Tuesday.

According to her, operatives from Ugbor Divisional Headquarters neutralised the suspect very early in the morning.

The command spokesperson explained that at around 4:45 a.m., the Divisional Police officer in charge of Ugbor Division received a distress call reporting an armed robbery operation by Benson Idahosa University along the Abuja quarters.

She went on to say that when the assailants saw the police operatives led by the DPO in charge of the police division, they engaged them in a gun battle.

According to Iwegbu, the police officers overpowered the suspects, killed one of them, and recovered some items, including a pump-action gun and five live cartridges.

In its unwavering efforts to combat the rising rate of armed robbery and other vices in the state, Edo state police command officers attached to its Ugbor divisional headquarters neutralised an armed robbery suspect on 12/07/2022 at around 0445hrs.

Following a distress call to the Divisional Police Officer in Charge of Ugbor Division at around 0445hrs on 12/07/2022, that there was an ongoing armed robbery operation along Abuja quarters by Benson Idahosa University, Ugbor G.R.A, Benin-city, the DPO personally led operatives to the scene with the aim of arresting the suspects.

When the suspects saw the police officers, they engaged them in a gunfight. However, the superior firepower of the police operatives rendered one of the suspected armed robbers ineffective.

One pump action gun and five live cartridges were recovered from the Suspect.

Efforts to apprehend the fleeing gang members are ongoing.

The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Police Command, CP Abutu Yaro, fdc, has reaffirmed the command’s readiness and commitment to combating crime and criminality in the state.
